DBS and Tourette

Updated: Apr 19

In this post, I want to talk about DBS treatment and what I think about it and my approach toward this kind of treatment. In DBS treatment they are implementing a battery-operated medical device which delivers electrical stimulation to targeted areas that control movement. It is a procedure where they operate on you in a hospital to insert the medical device into your brain. From what I was reading, it sounds like a promising treatment that could help control the Tourette and improve your life, but there are risks. I guess that the risks are not as significant as the benefit of this procedure and if it is written as a treatment in medical papers, then I suppose that it is safe to do it. I am personally afraid of all these kinds of treatment which involves surgery and especially the ones that deal with the brain. I have this fear of going into the surgery and not waking up because it's a sensitive area. I know that the doctors that are doing this procedure are well trained and highly qualified and the best doctors in the field. But I can't shake this fear, and I don't know if I could ever shake it and get rid of this fear. I think that my situation with the Tourette is not very ideal, but in my opinion, I am coping with it very well. I have my share of bad times that take me down a lot of times and sometimes for an extended period, but overall, I think that I manage to control the Tourette. The fact that I am working and maintaining a healthy life is an achievement and a proof of my success in dealing with the Tourette. In all of the treatments that I have read, I found that the brain is the critical organ in therapy with Tourette. I guess that it is only logical because of how the Tourette is diagnosed. I am fascinated by this fact, by the research, and about this and other treatments. I see this kind of treatment only as a last resort, and I will consider doing it only if my Tourette becomes unbearable and won't let me function. Now I feel that I am in a very good place and that I don't need it because I control the Tourette and not vice versa and I hope that I won't get to the point where I will need this treatment. I do not disapprove of this therapy. It sounds like a treatment that can help many people with Tourette who really need it.
